Art Therapy Ph. D.
The FSU Art Therapy Program provides graduates with a PhD in Art Education with a major in Art Therapy. The PhD program encourages students to make contributions to knowledge related to art therapy in scholarly and academic communities. Many recipients of the doctoral degree are now faculty in colleges and universities throughout the US, leaders in clinical settings, and researchers in the field.
Program Overview
The doctoral degree option is for individuals interested in high level scholarly research. The purpose of the PhD in Art Education with a major in Art Therapy Research and Practice is to encourage students to make significant contributions to the body of knowledge related to art therapy. This degree is more than just coursework, it is focused on research and theory with the goal of becoming an expert in the field. Students are supported in their efforts to investigate and advance understanding related innovative applications of art therapy, therapeutic processes and outcomes in art therapy, and other research topics based on individual student interests.

Structure
- This is a residential program, and students take face-to-face classes on FSU’s main campus.
- A minimum 36 hours of graduate level coursework
- A minimum of 24 hours of dissertation hours
- The degree typically takes 4-6 years to complete
Objectives
- In a PhD program, students engage deeply with theory, empirical literature, and research methodologies to identify and address knowledge gaps in the field.
- Graduate students will leave with the ability to facilitate and conduct research in arts administration contexts
- PhD graduates seek employment in leadership roles, in clinical sites, as faculty members in higher education institutions.

Meet SATA!
SATA at FSU is a student organization that works in conjunction with the art therapy program to provide students with social, academic, and emotional support, in addition to community service activities and professional development. We meet once per month to discuss upcoming community service and fundraising events and to encourage educational and professional opportunities for our members. Every year the Student Art Therapy Association (SATA) at FSU supports the art therapy, FSU, and Tallahassee communities by hosting nationally known art therapists as speakers for a free full-day workshop on contemporary issues relating to art therapy. SATA also participates in many local events around Tallahassee and the FL Panhandle region.
